Education resources for health care providers, in honour of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2016

Posted July 5, 2016

Did you know that World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) occurs every June? World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an opportunity for individuals, communities, organizations and governments around the world to raise awareness about elder abuse, highlight the need for appropriate action, and advance prevention efforts.

The Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario (RNAO) is the professional association representing registered nurses, nurse practitioners and nursing students in Ontario.

RNAO advocates for healthy public policy, promotes excellence in nursing practice, helps to shape the health-care system, and influences decisions that affect nurses and the public they serve. With funding from Employment and Social Development Canada, RNAO developed a Best Practice Guideline on the topic of preventing and addressing abuse and neglect of older adults along with various resources to help nurses and other health-care providers implement it. Visit RNAO’s website to access the evidence-based guideline and resources to help prevent and address abuse and neglect: RNAO.ca/elder-abuse

Across the world WEAAD is recognized on June 15, and although this day has passed for 2016, any time is a good time to promote dignity and respect for older adults!
