RNAO is Developing a New Edition of the Best Practice Guideline on the Topic of Fall Prevention

Posted July 18, 2016

Development of a new edition of the Registered Nurses’ Association of Ontario’s (RNAO) Best Practice Guideline on the topic of fall prevention and fall injury reduction is underway. The scope of the guideline has been widened to include all healthcare sectors (home care and community have been added) and the target population has been expanded from older adults to all adults at risk for falls. This guideline will replace the 2011 BPG Prevention of Falls and Fall Injuries in the Older Adult. As with all RNAO BPGs, this new guideline will focus on

practice recommendations for assisting health-care providers and client decisions;

education recommendations for supporting the skills required for nurses and other health-care providers; and

organization and policy recommendations addressing the importance of a supportive practice environment as an enabling factor for providing high quality care.

A panel of experts has been assembled to provide their knowledge and expertise which will help shape the recommendations and steer the development of the guideline. The panel members, who come from a wide variety of health-care sectors and disciplines, bring a rich body of knowledge to the guideline development process. Additionally, panel members who represent patient/caregiver organizations will be providing valuable input from the perspective of caregivers and people who have fallen or are at risk of falling.

If you are interested in learning more about this guideline please contact the RNAO Program Manager, Susan McNeill at smcneill@RNAO.ca

The expected date of publication is July 2017.
