New Report “Raising the bar on strength and balance: The importance of community based provision” examines the gap between evidence and practice, examining local challenges and identifying practical examples of doing things differently.

I recently came upon a report commissioned by The Centre for Ageing Better in the UK looking at raising the bar on strength and balance and the importance of community based provision in the prevention of falls and fall related injury. We know that literature demonstrates that maintaining and improving muscle strength and the ability to balance is critical to helping people live independently as they age and to reducing their risk of fall or an injurious fall so why do we struggle so much with implementation? Released in February 2019, the report “Raising the bar on strength and balance: The importance of community based provision” examines the gap between evidence and practice, examining local challenges and identifying practical examples of doing things differently. The findings are organized into five themes: raising awareness, encouraging uptake, exercise referral pathways that work, sticking to the evidence and monitoring for outcomes and improvement.  For those that attended the National Fall Conference in 2018 the report builds on Dawn Skeleton’s keynote messaging. Definitely worth a read!
