Osteoporosis, Fractures and Frailty Workshop in Owen Sound on June 5
Posted April 15, 2019
At least 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men will suffer a fragility fracture in their lifetime and with Ontario’s aging population, these numbers are likely to increase drastically.
In older adults, frailty is a predictor of future fractures. “I have seen far too many patients experience the devastating effects of fracture in long-term care setting and hope to reduce the pain and suffering associated with osteoporosis and fractures,” says Dr. Sid Feldman, community physician and keynote speaker at the upcoming interactive all-day learning workshop ‘Osteoporosis, Fractures and Frailty.’
The workshop is being hosted by Grey Bruce Geriatric Education Cooperative (GEC) in partnership with the Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy on June 5, 2019 at the Best Western Inn in Owen Sound. The interactive session aims at building knowledge and capacity of front-line health care providers (PSWs, nurses, nurse practitioners, family physicians, and allied health professionals), care givers and volunteers.
The workshop covers a wide range of topics including:
- Osteoporosis & Frailty
- Fracture Prevention for Long-Term Care Residents
- Exercise for Bone Health, Fall & Fracture Prevention
- Medications In Osteoporosis Treatment
- Diet for Optimal Bone Health
- Fracture Risk Scale (FRS)
- Fracture Screening & Prevention Program (FSPP)
Workshop speakers include: Dr. Sid Feldman, community family physician; Dr. Wendy Ward, Canada Research Chair in Bone and Muscle Development; Dr. Lora Giangregorio, Schlegel Research Chair in Mobility and Aging; Mary-Lou van der Horst, Project Manager, Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy for Long-Term Care; Julie Diaz, Ontario Osteoporosis Strategy Fracture Prevention Coordinator at Grey Bruce Health Services, and Rosemary Killeen, Director Distance Education and Continuing Professional Development, School of Pharmacy, University of Waterloo.
