Dr. Brian Goldman, host of White Coat, Black Art comments that
"Falls are the No. 1 cause of injury-related hospitalization for Canadian seniors aged 65 and older, according to 2014 Public Health Agency of Canada report, with about half of these hospitalizations resulting from a fall in the home. It's estimated that between 20 and 30 per cent of seniors fall each year."
If Dr Goldman had accessed more up to date reports from Parachute on the Costs of Injury, or the CIHI reports, he might have been even more alarmed about the higher numbers and percentages of falls and their outcomes. Still, he makes important points and has a wide reach across all media formats. Let's focus on the six fall risks:
1. Check your hearing and sight
Individuals with hearing loss are three times more likely to fall than those who can hear clearly.
2. Handrail shape makes a difference
A round handrail where you can get a "power grip" that allows you to fit your hand around the bar is the optimal shape to prevent a fall, Dr Alison Novak of the KITE Research Institute said.
3. When it comes to steps, size matters
A step that is too short or too high contributes to the risk of falling.
4. Use mobility aids and keep them by your side
As we've heard from Dr. Susan Hunter in Loop webinar series and articles - properly fitted and correctly used mobility aids and assistive devices are essential.
5. Fear of falling can contribute to more falls
Experiencing one or more falls, can lead to fear of falling (FoF) and reduction in physical activity and further increase the risk of future falls. See our Knowledge Product on fear of falling.
6. Side-effects from some medications can be risk factors.
