Positive outcomes in a fall risk assessment study at Health PEI using Stepscan gait and balance technology.

Hi everyone,

My name is Crystal Trevors and I am the Founder of Stepscan Technologies based in PEI Canada.  I wanted to share some information about a project that was completed at Health PEI (Charlottetown PEI, Canada) using our computerized gait and balance measurement technology for analyzing fall risk in community dwelling seniors.  There were some really amazing and significant positive outcomes including a 28% reduction in falls in the first five months of use.

As a result, Health PEI is moving from the standard paper-based surveys, and low-tech functional performance tools for assessing fall risk and moving to the Stepscan® System.  They will also be using the Stepscan foot pressure mapping function to identify diabetes patients at high risk for diabetic foot ulcers.

By replacing standard paper-based surveys and low-tech functional performance tools with the Stepscan® System, Health PEI will:

  • Reduce the assessment time for fall risk.

  • Improve the quality of fall risk profiling and risk stratification.

  • Increase proactive care for those at high risk for falls.

  • Decrease the incidence of new falls.

  • Decrease development of new foot ulcers and DFU hospital admissions

Results from this work is shaping Health PEI’s strategy for the future and we are thrilled to be a part of it.
