The Canadian Association of Retired Persons (C.A.R.P.) takes fall prevention seriously. For Fall Prevention Month, the organization presented and recorded on Nov 18, 2021 – a great webinar “Falls: Common, Costly and Preventable” featuring Dr Nancy Edwards, Saskatoon Fire Department’s Dori Krahn, and Parachute director Stephanie Cowle. Check out the C.A.R.P. page on Fall Prevention for the YouTube recording, and more at https://www.carp.ca/2021/09/22/no-one-expects-to-fall-falls-prevention-month/
Dr Nancy Edwards has led the Fall Prevention focus for the association, and in 2020 did a series of recorded webinars on fall prevention on the above website. In this webinar, Nancy began with an overview of falls statistics, and personal risk factors, as well as the human cost of falls, and overcoming myths. Later in the webinar, she did a comprehensive review of fall prevention strategies for all participants to apply.
Dori Krahn described how the Saskatoon Fire Department did more than 1000 “lift assists” in 2020, with 86% of people calling for a lift assist more than once a year. Being proactive the Saskatoon Fire Department does group presentations and home visits, and developed the “Remembering When” Fire and Fall Prevention program. See it on the S.F.D. website.
Stephanie Cowle summarized the new Cost of Injuries report, detailing the impacts of falls across Canada in hospitalizations, and deaths. She joined C.A.R.P.’s Advocacy director in calling for policy changes at all levels, that a focus on fall prevention will save money in the health care system and save lives.
C.A.R.P. members were keeping the chat and question boxes full calling for more prevention strategies. Nancy Edwards gave participants a memorable way to keep four key approaches in mind – think of feet backwards - TEEF:
T ell if you fell
E xercise
E nvironment
